    Course Description:

    This comprehensive online course is designed to elevate the skills of physiotherapists in managing complex musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of contemporary pain management models, assessment techniques, and evidence-based treatment strategies. The course provides a blend of theoretical foundations and practical applications, equipping physiotherapists with the tools necessary to improve patient outcomes in clinical settings.

     

    Learning Objectives:

    By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

    1. Understand and apply the biomedical, biopsychosocial, and enactive approaches to pain management.

    2. Identify and differentiate between chronic muscular, neural, and psychosocial pain.

    3. Assess and evaluate chronic pain using a multifactorial approach.

    4. Implement effective pain management strategies including desensitization, capacity building, and recovery improvement.

    5. Utilize advanced techniques such as acceptance and commitment therapy, pain habituation, and supervised pain neglect.

     

     Course Content:

    1. Introduction to Complex MSK Pain Management:

       - Overview of pain models: biomedical, biopsychosocial, and enactive.

       - The role of predictive processing in understanding pain.

     

    2. Understanding Chronic Pain:

       - Peripheral and central sensitization.

       - Changes in brain structure and activation patterns.

       - Common symptoms and clinical classification.

     

    3. Focus on Fibromyalgia:

       - Causes, symptoms, and precipitating factors.

       - Pain management and strategies specific to fibromyalgia.

     

    4. Pain Assessment Techniques:

       - Subjective evaluation and sensitivity assessments (light touch, sharp, cold, blunt pressure).

       - IMMPACT recommendations and clinical implications.

     

    5. Pain Management Strategies:

       - De-sensitization and capacity building.

       - Improving recovery through interval aerobic exercises and relaxation techniques.

       - Active learning, cognitive flexibility, and acceptance therapy.

       - Strategies for managing flares and promoting pain resilience.
