    COURSE OUTLINE

    THEORETICAL BASIS

    - Traditional Approaches to Taping - Biomechanical vs Neurophysiological - evidence base
    - Why Tape Mechanically? e.g., Load & tendinopathy, Force transfer & function, clinical scenarios that might warrant taping
    - What we are NOT doing
    - Kinetics vs Kinematics
    - Limitations of traditional taping with regards to managing load, movement & function
    - Fundamentals of taping mechanically:
      1. Cross a joint or joints
      2. Apply in the shortened position
      3. Get good purchase on the lever
    - Essential Properties - tape comparison
    - Mechanisms - incorporating emerging research on each:
      1. Force Contribution (kinetics & direct techniques)
      2. Modifying Movement (kinematics, indirect techniques, glides & rotations - and effect on kinetics)
      3. Lever Arms & Length-Tension Relationship
      4. Force Closure
      5. Soft tissue offload
      6. +/- Reduce tendon compliance
    - Examples in research - Arch and Hip Adduction/Internal Rotation/Foot & Ankle etc. and how to integrate Research/Reasoning/Rigour to achieve RESULTS
    - How to develop and apply a Technique Development Flowchart
      - AIM
      - AXIS of ROTATION

    APPLICATION GUIDELINES

    TECHNIQUES - emphasis on illustrating mechanisms and importance of axis, position, line of pull, etc.

    UPPER LIMB:

    1. Upper limb offload
    2. Internal Rotation (Late Cocking or RTS dislocation)
    3. External Rotation (Deceleration in follow through, function in neuro, golf swings, backhands in tennis)
    4. Comprehensive Offload incorporating elements of 2 & 3
    5. Cervical Offload/bilateral scapula elevation
    6. Scapula Sling
    7. Lateral Elbow incorporating Mulligan lateral glide, soft tissue offload, and counterforce bracing
    8. Ulnar Collateral Ligament of elbow (introduce concept of Combined Systems Taping)
    9. Pronation & Supination (proximal and/or distal RU joints)
    10. Wrist & Finger Extensors
    11. Carpal Instabilities
    12. Ulnar carpal de-rotation (TFCC)
    13. DeQuervain’s
    14. Mallet Finger
    15. Thumb UCL
    16. Finger Ligaments

    LOWER LIMB:

    1. Arch Support - Windlass
    2. Figure 8 Arch Support
    3. Calf/Achilles/Plantar Fascia complex
    4. Lateral Ligament Complex of ankle
    5. Reverse 6 spirals
    6. Knee Extension - Quads and Patella tendon variations
    7. Knee Flexion - Hamstrings
    8. Patellofemoral Loop
    9. Patellofemoral Sling
    10. Hip Extension/Abduction/Ext Rotation
    11. Iliotibial Band
    12. Hallux Valgus

    PRACTICAL SESSION

    Handling Basics - including anchors, bends and corners, tension, things to avoid (that you may do with other tapes)

    UPPER LIMB & LOWER LIMB techniques as above. May need to reduce the number or vary slightly depending on audience and time frame

    SESSION 4 is combined with SESSIONS 2 & 3 in a F2F setting alternating between demonstration and practice.
